Hi! My name is Carolina Permuy and I am a rising senior at Georgetown Visitation. The topic of immigration and the immersion of different cultures has always been prevalent in my life since my dad is Cuban American and my mom is Mexican American. Growing up I’ve found myself fascinated by my grandparents’ experiences with migration. During a time where Cubans were uprooted from their generational homes, my grandparents helped lead underground movements against Fidel Castro before having to flee to the United States. Once in Miami, their stories progressed with my grandma opening an art gallery for displaced Cuban artists and my grandfather becoming a voice for Cuban Americans in Miami. I could go on about the inspirational work of both my Cuban grandparents along with my Mexican grandfather who served in the Vietnam War for the United States, but maybe I can save their story for another time! I am blessed to attend such a great school where I can critically think about topics like immigration. A huge turning point was the interview project we completed in Honors European History where my group and I interviewed the Director of the Migrant Unit for Save the Children. Since then, my group and I co founded the Save the Children club where we raise money for children around the world in conflict stricken areas. Though both my parents speak Spanish and I can understand most of it, I can’t speak Spanish fluently. I often struggled with this disconnect in cultures but today it makes me eager to learn the language and help as many people I can! Though we are experiencing a turbulent time domestically, Voices of Migrants offers a platform for a diverse minority that lack the basic right of asylum.

¡Hola! Me llamo Carolina Permuy y estoy en mi último año de secundaria en Georgetown Visitation. El tema de la inmigración y la inmersión de diferentes culturas siempre ha prevalecido en mi vida porque mi papá es de Cuba y mi mamá es de México. Al crecer, me han fascinado las experiencias migratorias de mis abuelos a los Estados Unidos. Durante el regimiento de Fidel Castro, mis abuelos ayudaron a liderar movimientos clandestinos contra Castro antes de buscar refugio en los Estados Unidos. En Miami, mi abuela abrió una galería de arte para artistas cubanos desplazados y mi abuelo convirtiéndose en una voz para los cubanos en Miami. Podría hablar más del trabajo inspirador de mis abuelos cubanos junto al de mi abuelo mexicano que sirvió en la Guerra de Vietnam para los Estados Unidos, pero voy a guardar su historia para otro tiempo! Tengo la suerte de asistir a una escuela tan increíble en la que he podido pensar críticamente sobre temas como la migración. Un gran momento, para mi, fue un proyecto que complete en mi clase de Historia Europea donde mi grupo y yo entrevistamos al Director de la Unidad de Migrantes para Save the Children. Desde entonces, mi grupo y yo fundamos el club Save the Children, y recaudamos dinero para niños en zonas afectadas por conflictos. Aunque mis padres hablan español y yo puedo entender la mayor parte, no puedo hablar español con fluidez. A menudo luché con esta desconexión en las culturas, pero hoy trabajo en aprender el idioma y ayudar a todas las personas que pueda como pueda. Aunque estamos viviendo un momento turbulento en el país, Voices of Migrants ofrece una plataforma para una minoría diversa que carece de la derecho básica de un hogar.
